Cormorants

Reed Cormorant
Fairly common resident. A small, long-tailed, crested cormorant, black to dark brown with paler, mottled underparts in the female. Found on most deep waters.

Whitebreasted Cormorant
The Whitebreasted Cormorant is also a failry common resident. This cormorant species is larger than the Reed Cormorant. It is seen regularly on major dams, often resting in dead trees or on posts.

Cormorant found in southern Africa share a range only along the Namib Coast and the west coast of South Africa. Crowned and bank cormorant (Phalacrocorax coronatus and P. neglectus) are endemic residents with small populations, confined to rocky shores and offshore islands, while Cape and whitebreasted or great cormorant (P. capensis and P. carbo) are widespread and numerous in the subcontinent.
